What a fantastic site! I am jealous. It urges me to make one for my family. If it looks like yours, you will know why.
I have been doing genealogy for my family and related individuals mainly from the Piedmont area of Italy. I have over a hundred Ottolenghis of which about 40 are my relatives. The oldest is from the mid 1700s.
Good luck,

Hello to everybody, I am Claudia Ottolenghi, born in Argentina. My father is Aldo Ottolenghi, born in Turin in 1918. My father's parents were both Ottolenghi, Riccardo and Ada, but they were not relatives. Ada's father was General Vittorio Ottolenghi. I am trying to collect some information on our family's branch from some elatives and hope to be able to send it asap. Last but not least, I have been asked to deal with the Spanish page of the site, as there are some Os in Latin America and we would like them to join the site, soooo... come and visit us there! Since I am moving, until I will have a private email address, should you wish to send me a message, you could send it either to Bryan or to Howard, who will retransmit it. Hasta pronto! Claudia Ottolenghi Claudia

Dear Bryan I'm very pleased to find so many Ottolenghi's all over the world. Until now ( I'm fifty) I suffered from a kind of solitude, being the only one with this name in my city, Trieste. I remember that when I was at school, it was very difficult to explain to the other fellows the origin of this name. Now, using this site, my son Lorenzo has a great advantage in this task. It could be useful for me and for my cousin Valerio Mortara, who lives in Brazil, and is constructing a family tree, to get some information about the descendant of David Ottolenghi to find if there is any direct connection with our grand-grand father Lazzaro Ottolenghi who's name is on the section "some famous Ottolenghi's" of ottolenghi.org.
Greetings and happy 2000 !

OIA Anniversary Message
Ottolenghi International Association came into being in September 1999, but May 10th is a special day for me. It was on May 10th 1999 that I made the first O contact when I found a single mention of Ottolangui in an Internet search and from there on it has been a most exciting adventure through the history, geography and genealogy of the Ottolenghis worldwide.
I have been fortunate to make contact with so many new and interesting people, in five continents, some of whom I have been privileged to meet in person, whilst others have maintained regular correspondence with me. Some others did not respond but I hope that they have found some interest, albeit passive, in our efforts to bring together Ottolenghis from all over the world.
The establishment of OIA and its Internet site (www.ottolenghi.org) has given us an excellent platform in providing a forum, a place to communicate with each other, which will help us to promote our research and share our knowledge about our ancestors, to preserve our heritage and learn how we are all related in if very remotely.
I hope that in the very near future we shall be able to develop the website and the association fully in working towards its becoming an organisation that will be able to promote actively matters of mutual interest to Ottolenghis and their relatives all over the world.
I would be very happy to hear from you if you have any comments, suggestions about how you would like to see OIA progressing towards these aims.
With best regards,

Hi In the late 1940s-early 1950s, I knew a Janet/Janette Ottolenghi who lived a few blocks away from me in Manhattan. She was in my class, so she should be about my age(61).Janet and her family came to NY from Italy after World War II. I was hoping someone would know something about her, or how to contact her-especially now with the wonderful electronic means we have. I would appreciate any info. Thank You Martin Kepecs-my email is mkepecs@aol.com
Subject: Ottolenghi family Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 12:28:18 PDT From: "Isak Perera" <isak_perera@hotmail.com>
Stumbled on the Ottolenghi site. My aunt, Simha Eskenazi, nee Perera, was widowed in early April 1941, when the Germans shot her husband in Zagreb, Croatia, Jugoslavia. Shortly after the end of World War II, she married Dr. Raffaele Ottolenghi, a widower who lived in Torino, Italy. I believe that he had a son from his first marriage, and that the son died at an early age. After Raffaele died, my aunt sent me some of his books, as a memento. The books had names inscribed in them, and I wonder if there is any way of finding out who were these individuals. 1) Abramo Ottolenghi, 1860 -63, with an embossed seal, COLL.o CONVITTO IRAELITICO, MONDOVI - book was in two parts, part one published in Trieste, Tipografia Mareigh,1853 - part two, Verona, Tipografia Friziera, 1856
2) A sticker, as follows: EREDITA Dell' ECC.mo SIG. ZIO, Rabbino Maggiore, Buonajut Abram Ottolenghi - published REGGIO MDCCCXII, Nella Tipografia della Societa, presso l'autore
3) Inside front cover, handwritten Emilio Ottolenghi, next page hand stamped Renato Ottolenghi, Via Principe Tomasso 2, Torino book published MILANO, Serafino Muggiani E COMP., Via Unione,N 11-13 1876.
Something else that you may find of interest - in the early fifties, I was employed by an engineering firm in Boston, Massachusetts. One of my colleagues was an older gentleman, Richard (Dick) Langley. He was at that time, an Episcopalian. We became friendly, and he used to tell me: " you are Jewish, but at one time we were also Jewish", to which I used to reply: " Ya, right, Langley sure sounds Jewish to me", as I assumed he was joking and teasing me. But after reading the information on your site, I now wonder if he was a descendant of the Ottolenghi family.
Tante belle cose, Isak Perera
Hello! My grandmother Anna Tagliacozzo Coen was born in Rome in 1894 or 1895 and was the daughter of Giuseppe Tagliacozzo and Ester Ottolenghi. My great grandmother I believe was not born in Rome but in some small village outside of Rome...but not sure. Ester Ottolenghi was the daughter of Abramo Ottolenghi and Rosa or Rebeca DiPorto or DePorto.
Anyone know of this part of the Ottolenghi family. My grandmother said that many of her family members were deported to Auschwitz from Rome in WWII.
Thanks for any information.
Anna Algazi
For Anna Algazi, Thanks for your enquiry, we are checking and will get back to you. You didn't leave an e-mail address and we don't post family tree information in the guest book. So please contact me on bryanell@hotmail.com so that we can pass you any information by e-mail Bryan Langley
Isak Perera on 24 July asked for some information on the inscriptions on some books he had acquired from a relative and some names including Raffaelo and Renato Ottolenghi:
", COLL.o CONVITTO IRAELITICO, MONDOVI" Probably a Jewish Boarding School (Colleggio) in Mondovi, about 100 km south of Turin. In the past, this town had an active Jewish community.
"EREDITA Dell' ECC.mo SIG. ZIO, Rabbino Maggiore…" "…Eccelentissimo Signore Zio…." Roughly translated as "the heredity of my uncle, the excellent Senior Rabbi…."
My family knew an Italian dentist Renato Ottolenghi in New York City in the 1940s. For a short time he lived in our apartment. His father may have been a gynecologist in Turin. In addition the 1911 Census of Turin has a Dr. Raffaello O. living there with a young son Renato.

Hi -- This is a great way to track family history. I'm not an Ottolenghi, but a good friend of mine is. He grew up in Durham, NC, and I believe his parents came to the US from Italy around 1950. He's really smart and motivated -- not to mention, cute and sensitive! Are these traits of all Ottolenghi's?!

The Ellis Island, New York, USA immigration records from 1892 to 1924 came on line last week: http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ The site is very very busy. These five are all the Ottolenghi listed:

I'm so glad to have found this website, having half-heartedly thought about searching for Ottolanguis for some time! My 'part' in this family is as follows: My maternal grandmother was Harriet Ottolangui, born London in 1901, November 11th. She was the daughter of David Ottolangui and Julia nee Bostle. They lived just off the Mile End Road in East London, where they kept a fish shop. My grandmother had two sisters, Rachael (known in the family as Ray-Ray) and Lilly. Brothers were Mark or Mordechai and Eleazor. Her fraternal grandfather was Mordechai Ottolangui. Her father David was killed in the first world war. Her sister Lilly is still alive and very well aged 89, she is my great aunt. I will watch this site with great interest, and would love to hear from anybody who I may be able to help. Regards Geraldine Fagelson. I can be contacted on email FERANFABRICSHOP@AOL.COM

JULY 20TH, 2003 FROM ARTURO OTTOLENGHI (redhill@innernet.net) DEAR ALL WE JUST RETURNED FROM OUR TRIP TO ITALY AND I WANTED TO PASS ON SOME FINDINGS WHICH MAY BE OF INTEREST TO OTHER OTTOLENGHIS. WHILE STAYING AT MY "HOME TOWN" OF ACQUI TERME IN PIEDMONT, I CALLED ON MY FRIEND ROBERTO GABEY OF ALESSANDRIA WHO IS OF ITALIAN JEWISH EXTRACTION. TOGETHER WE DROVE IN QUEST OF ODOLENGO PICCOLO AND ODOLENGO GRANDE, WHERE ACCORDING TO THE HISTORIAN MR VITTORE COLORNI OUR FAMILY NAME ORIGINATES. THESE TWO TOWNS ARE TRULY SMALL. PICCOLO HAS ABOUT 3 FAMILIES AND GRANDE HAS ABOUT 6 . THEY ARE LOCATED ABOUT 6 MILES APART IN VALLE CERINA ABOUT HALF WAY BETWEEN CASALE MONFERRATO AND ASTI, AN HOUR'S DRIVE FROM ALESSANDRIA. PICCOLO IS TOTALY NON DESCRIPT AND CAN BE PASSED WITHOUT KNOWING IT. GRANDE IS ON TOP OF A HIGH HILL WHICH IS DOMINATED BY AN AGRARIAN TYPE CASTLE FROM THE MID 1600'S. IT IS ALMOST ABANDONDED AS IS THE TOWN. THE LADY WHO OWNS THE LOCAL BAR/CAFE SAYS THAT SHE HAS NEVER HEARD OF OTTOLENGHIS. THERE IS A CHURCH FROM THE 1800'S UNDER RECONSTRUCTION, BUT IT APPEARS THAT THEY RAN OUT OF FUNDING. WE THEN PROCEEDED TO CASALE MONFERRATO TO AN EXQUISITE SYNAGOGUE AND MUSEUM BUILT IN 1595. THE SILVER WAS LOOTED IN 1943 BUT THE REST IS INTACT AND IN GREAT SHAPE THANKS TO GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE FUNDING AND THE CARE OF ITS TWO ADMINISTRATORS: ADRIANA TORRE ( A COUSIN OF MINE) AND DR SALVATORE GIORGIO OTTOLENGHI. WHEREAS THERE WERE UP TO 2500 JEWISH FAMILIES SUPPORTING THIS SYNAGOGUE IN THE EARLY 1800'S THERE NOW APPEAR TO BE ABOUT 26 FAMILIES. WE DISCUSSED JOSEPH SOLOMON OTTOLENGHI, BORN IN CASALE 1711 AND WHO LEFT LIVORNO IN THE 1750'S FOR LONDON TO MARRY AN UNCLE'S DAUGHTER. WHEN THE DAUGHTER MARRIED SOMEBODY ELSE, JOSEPH WAS ASKED TO PAY BACK THE BOAT PASSAGE TO THE PROSPECTIVE FATHER IN LAW. HE COULD NOT PAY IT BACK, SO HE WAS SENT TO DEBTORS PRISON. HE WAS BAILED OUT BY FRIENDS. HE THEN LEFT ENGLAND FOR SAVANNAH , GEORGIA, WHERE HE WAS RECRUITED BY THE COLONY OF GEORGIA SILK INDUSTRY BASED ON HIS KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRADE FROM ITALY. GEORGIA WANTED TO BE INDEPENDENT OF IMPORTED SILK FROM ENGLAND AND FRANCE. HE PARLAYED HIS KNOWLEDGE INTO SEVERAL THOUSAND ACRES OF LAND HOLDINGS AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH IN 1775. MY COUSIN WHO LIVED IN SAVANNAH CONTACTED ME A FEW YEARS AGO ABOUT SEEING AN OTTOLENGHI TOMBSTONE IN SAVANNAH. ADRIANA AND GIORGIO ALSO PROVIDED A NEW POSSIBLE SOURCE FOR THE OTTOLENGHI NAME. THERE WAS AN AUSTRIAN MONARCH NAMED OTTONE I WHO HAD A LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE WHO COLLECTED TAXES AND DISPENSED JUSTICE FOR THE KING AROUND 1570. THIS POSITION WAS CALLED "LENCH" AND HE WAS THEREFORE OTTO'S LENCH. HE HAD A DAUGHTER WHO HE SENT OFF TO MARRY THE LOCAL CASALE MONFERRATO GOVERNOR NAMED MARCHESE ALERAMO. THEIR DESCENDENTS WERE CALLED "OTTOLENCH" I HIGHLY RECOMMEND A TRIP TO THE CASALE SYNAGOGUE AND IF YOU WISH TO CONTACT ADRIANA OR GIORGIO THE E-MAIL IS OTTOLENGHI3@TIN.IT OR FAX 39 02 700406942 TEL 39 0142 452076 BEST WISHES ARTURO OTTOLENGHI GETTYSBURG, PA redhill@innernet.net

Attention all Ottolenghi descendants A lawyer advised me that there was on sale a hand written family tree that goes back to 1640. I bought it, but does not relate to my branch of family. It deals with Jacob Sanson Ottolenghi (1640 – 1700) who marries Rebecca Stella daughter of Samuele Sacerdote of Alessandria(Italy). His daughters marry a Dina of Acqui and a Todros of Turin, the son in 1800 marries a Sanguinetti of Modena…. The tree ends with Israel and Bianca Heiman's children (Stella,Bianca and Raffele born between the first decade of 1900) and Israel's brothers Raffaele and Cesare (1863 – 1916)and Cesare' sons Aldo Bonaiut, Riccardo, Alfredo. Should anyone recognize his ancestors and be interested in the document, he can contact me by e-mail: ottolenghi3@tin.it Thanks for you help and best regards to all our family members. Giorgio Ottolenghi

Hello From Tony & Merle Ottolangui in Australia. ottolangui2002@yahoo.com
Rabbi Adolfo Ottolenghi was deported from the Ghetto of Venice to Auschwitz on 17th August 1944 together with elderly and sick residents of the Jewish old people’s home. In Auschwitz, all trace of him disappeared as he shared the tragic fate of those of his community whom he refused to abandon. A memorial plaque in the Venice Ghetto bears the following inscription - translation by Paul Sulzberger. Adolfo Ottolenghi Teacher and martyr among the Jewish people. From the night of blindness, He radiated the light of his faith. Comfort to the meek, And strength to those who were wavering In the hour of inhuman hatred. In this Synagogue, so close to heart, And in this community which he loved so dearly May his name be remembered and blessed. Born Livorno 30 July 1885 - Rabbi of Venice from 1919 to 17 August 1944 The City of Venice has recently announced that a forest parkland is to be dedicated to the memory of Rabbi Adolfo Ottolenghi, z”l, in which there will be a new Holocaust Memorial building designed by the Italian architect Mario Botta. Amongst Botta’s recent works are the new wing for the Quereni Stampalia Foundation and the Rovereto Museum of Contemporary Art. The Mayor of Venice, Paolo Costa said that these are tangible signs of the City’s determination not to forget. The Ottolenghi Forest webpage can be viewed here: http://www.comune.venezia.it/boscodimestre/territ/boschi/otto/inizi.htm Other memorials are in the Jewish Cemetery at the Venice Lido and an eternal lamp at the Venice Talmud Torah. A 78 page biography of the rabbi by Umberto Fortis has been published by the Querini Stampalia Foundation For details see the foundation’s website www.querinistampalia.it/book/storie.html Bryan Langley bryanell@hotmail.com
